Southeastern California Conference Takes Massive Step Towards Equality in Ministry

Great News! The Southeastern California Conference released the following press release today:

Riverside, CA — The Executive Committee of the Southeastern California Conference voted today “to remove the term ‘Ordained-Commissioned’ and replace it with the term ‘Ordained’ on all ministerial credentials, regardless of the gender of the credential holder.” This is effective immediately.

Since 2000 the conference had issued “Ordained-Commissioned” ministerial credentials to men and women.

The committee believes this step will enable all pastors to better fulfill the conference’s mission statement, which is the expansion of God’s kingdom through preaching, teaching, publishing and living of the everlasting gospel throughout the cross-cultural communities of its territory.

Mid-America Union Ends Discrimination. Will the Pacific Union Be Next?

Great news! The Mid-America Union Executive Committee voted to end the discriminatory practice of refusing ordination credentials based on gender.

The Mid-America Union Votes to Support the Ordination of Women | Spectrum Magazine

This comes a month after the so-called E-60 policy, which would have opened leadership positions to women in the North American Division, was rescinded. NAD President Dan Jackson explained that the NAD had overstepped its legal bounds in voting on the E-60 policy, as the NAD does not have constituencies and thus cannot deviate from General Conference policy.

However, unions do have constituencies, and therefore any union may shed discriminatory policies with a simple vote of its executive committee–which is exactly what the Mid-American Union did. And guess what? Next Tuesday is the next meeting of the Pacific Union Executive Committee. Will the Pacific Union be the next union to stop limiting the possibilities of women to serve their church for no other reason than that they are female? Let’s hope so!
